Interesting tanto signed
“Moriiye” not sure about the signature, but the blade
really looks to be from the Nanbokucho period. If the signature is
not deemed genuine, it is advisable in this case to have the signature
professionally removed and submitted for shinsa. The blade has a lot
of characteristics to be from the Nanbokucho period, wide body, thin
kasane with a very nice nioi deki ko-notare hamon done very well.
Looks like Soden Bizen work from the 1300’s. Nice hada of itame
mokume also appear on this sword. The mountings for this tanto are
very rare and nice. Wrap looks like lacquered whale baleen done in
jabara maki style. Scabbard is a beautiful custom original lacquer
of kiri and leaves. Dragon menuki also act as the mekugi as well.
A lacquered gold wood kozuka completes the mount. This is a very nice
mount that quite possibly be from the Mid Edo period. In very good
condition, a very nice package. |
