Late Kamakura / Early
Nanbokucho period tachi that was shortened to wakizashi size. In very
healthy condition, it is very rare to find swords of this age in this
condition.
In new professional polish with a new 2 piece gold foiled habaki.
NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon attributed to the Nio School. The Nio School
is most famous from the maker Kiyotsuna, which had gotten their namesake
"Nio" for their school. At the Nio-do temple, the great
fire there would have damaged the famous Nio gods statues had it not
been for a sword made by Kiyotsuna that cut the chains that barred
the way.
Nio swords follow the Yamashiro tradition of sword making. This sword
has all of the characteristics of a fine sword by such a school, nie-deki
suguha hamon with utsuri in the ji area. Grain pattern is a beautiful
Ko-Itame tsumi with a few areas of hadatachi gokoro. There are no
flaws in this sword, and the boshi is also very healthy (see oshigata).
Just for the record, the polish, habaki and paper alone are around
$3750 in value. This is a fine sword for those that want a REAL Kamakura/Early
Nanbokucho blade that is healthy. In a very unusual shikomi (cane
sword) mount. |
