Description
Okimasa (Tsukamoto) was considered the top Gendai tosho of his time and was poised to be the first Living National treasure swordsmith from this era were it not for his early death in 1960. He trained under his father-in-law, Kasama Shigetsugu and few of his swords are ever offered for sale. This sword was ordered by Nakazawa-san in 1942. Due to the military atmosphere in 1942 and the high cost and demand of Okimasa swords, this sword most likely was ordered by someone in the military. The addittional inscriptions of "Pray for good luck in battle" and reference to "Hachiman", the god of war would further support that Nakazawa had a military background. In Fuller's military book, there is a reference to Mitsuo Nakazawa who was promoted to commander of the 1st Division in October, 1941. So the sword's completion date of May, 1942 seems to concur the relationship between this sword and Nakazawa's background and ownership. Blade is in a high grade shirasaya and in full polish and is healthy in very good condition. The hamon is gunome choji with a mokume hada. Accompanied with a NTHK paper.
