Description

A katana by Shibata Ka of the Akita prefecture in full polish with NBTHK Hozon. Shibata Ka's real name was Shibata Masataro and was born in 1887. He was born into a wealthy family and thus he had access to study many fine blades, as well as being a collector himself, he had a great collection of his own that he studied. With his passion for Japanese swords, he established his own sword forge and developed his sword making skills and research into recreating the older swords of the Kamakura period.

This sword resembles blades made in the Soden Bizen style. The blade has a beautiful hamon of choji midare with lots of ashi and yo. The hada is ko-itame with jinie. The jigane is beautiful and you can see why Shibata Ka was known for his ability to forge a jigane that has the characteristics of fine old swords of the Kamakura period. In fact, when Shibata Ka was learning kantei from the famous Honami Koson, he made two tanto for him. One of these tanto has been used for kantei and no one attributes the tanto to gendaito, and is mostly mistaken for a tanto by Kunimitsu of the Kamakura period.

Blades made by Shibata Ka are rare (especially a katana) and are of exceptional quality, therefore they are very seldom seen for sale.

The blade is accompanied with a gold foiled habaki, high grade shirasaya and a NBTHK Hozon.
