Description

Very strong feeling tsuba with great iron color. Although not a large tsuba, from the way this tsuba is carved with its strong iron rim gives this tsuba a very commanding presence when seen on a sword. The artist who is from Sado did a very great job in making this piece. NTHK Paper (old).

Description
Rare excellent condition Higo tsuba with Hosokawa family kamon. It is very rare to find such a nice example of higo gold and silver inlay in such intact condition. Usually because the tsuba are iron, the rust will cause the inlay to become disconnected with the surface of the tsuba and is often lost. This tsuba has all of its inlay, and looks as gorgeous as the day it was made. The presence of the Hosokawa mon with the sakura flower mon is most likely a sign that this tsuba was used by a direct retainer of the Hosokawa family. Also this type of tsuba was very expensive, therefore could not have been purchased by a bushi of lower status.. iron plate, well made and hammered, excellent fine gold and silver inlay done in the famous Higo fashion. Gold for the main Hosokawa mon, silver for the the lower mon. even better than the pictures in hand!

Description
Nice iron Ko-Nara style tsuba with design of a man on a brigde talking to a frog on the bank of a stream with a large tree. The scene extends to the reverse side of the tsuba. The carving is done well with nice use of gold, silver and copper inlay as highlights. This is a well forged and hammered tsuba. As with other Nara tsuba the motif is depicting a Japanese folktale, perhaps this is tsuba is a depiction of the Japanese folktale "Washi no Tamago" or The eagle's egg, where the main characters are a man and a frog. A nice tsuba for a very reasonable price, and in good condition with nice patina.
