Description
Very nice package consisting of a Efu no Tachi mount that was used as a very high level gift from either the Imperial family, or some other higher up clientele. The mounting is in very good condition, all of the metal work has a very heavy gold finish. One small bale of rice that is found on the handle design is missing, but other than that it is in very nice condition. The scabbard is a very nice gold nashiji lacquer, the type that is of very nice quality level. There are a few chips in the lacquer, but otherwise it is in good condition .Please note that this can be repaired.
The blade is a rare and unusual Minamoto Yoshichika. Done in the manner of a very old Heian period styled tachi, this is a very nice elegant blade. Yoshichika the 1st is known to have made the blades for the Imperial palace guard detail, and many of his blades were tested by the famous Kenshi Nakayama Hakudo. Hakudo supposedly tested all of the Yoshichika blades that were used for the Imperial palace guards, as well as carried one himself. The blade is in need of a polish, but you can see the well made grain structure, and a very nice suguha hamon. A nice well knit ko itame hada with ji nie is seen above the hamon. There are NO flaws, and it should polish out very beautifully. The shape is very elegant, and by appearance alone looks like that of a Heian period tachi. This example is rare in the fact that it is also dated, Yoshichika blades often do not have any dating on the tang. This blade was given to a high ranking American officer during the occupation period, then brought back to the United States. Accompanied with the Tachi stand that was given at the same time, minor damage, but in relatively good condition .
