Description |
| Mino shinogi-zukuri katana, late Koto period, ubu, 1-hole, mumei, in old polish with horimono of ken and grooves, lotus blossom etc. Hamon is togari (pointed) gunome, like sanbon-sugi. Hada is itame/mokume; length is 26 7/8'. There are a few small ware near the top of the blade, and there are some scratches and worn areas, about 80% polish still very enjoyable. It is mounted in a black lacquer semi-handachi saya with silver mon fittings en suite, with carved ginger in circle mon and inome (heart shapes). The kashira is dented. The wrap is period and intact, a tan/greyish solid wrap with no menuki ever mounted. There is patterned silk fabric visible under the wrap. The seppa are matching, original, and solid silver! Unfortunately, someone peeled the silver foil off of the copper habaki base, which can be refoiled. The black lacquer is without damages. This sword was purchased as a possible Mino Kanemoto (see dealer's letter and opinion paper) but recently was awarded NTHK Kanteisho to den Seki (Mino) Kanetsune from the late 1500's. The Kanetsune line later turned into the famous Owari Masatsune line in the Shinto Period. The tsuba is mokko-shape, with very prominent bones and a butterfly cut in sukashi. It is signed 'Yamakichibei' and has one lead plug; it is a nice tsuba on its own.
