| A very rare and unusual tsuba by the 3rd Jingo master. In most cases, the first and second Jingo masters did not sign their works (there are 2-3 known exceptions for the 2nd). And in many cases of signed 3rd masters, the signature usually only reads as “Yatsushiro Jingo Saku”. It is one theory that because this tsuba is most likely a special order, nit just from the signature, but from the style in which this tsuba is made is why this tsuba is signed “Yatsushiro Jingo Sandai Me Saku” meaning that definitely “Me” the 3rd Jingo made this piece. This shows the pride level of these artists, and the fact that they did not want to be confused with anyone else or any other generation, especially when doing pieces that are not the norm. The design of sukashi is not seen often in Jingo pieces. But when you look at the design, one can see that it must have been specially ordered. This design with the birds and the constellation is actually a specific time in history. It would take some careful research to find out when in history the stars were aligned just so, but it can be done. So this particular place in time must have been important for someone, or something and they asked the 3rd Jingo to make this tsuba with this design. Bushi were often very suspicious, but that seems to go with the territory when your life was on the line everyday. The iron color is magnificent, dark chocolate and wet in feeling, all of the traits one would expect from the Jingo masters. The sukashi work is extremely well done and remains “free” within the confined space. A serious rare collectable tsuba.
