Description
Very nice tsuba made by a tosho or sword maker. Tosho tsuba are highly collectable due to their high quality iron. The dense, well mixed iron shows its quality from the patina on the well hammered surface. Often in the case of Tosho tsuba, a simple design is cut out of the surface and in this tsuba a very well done design f a rare weapon known as a “kama yari”. The kama yari has the blade shape of a scythe, but is used on a longer pole and used like a yari or spear. As there are many new reproductions for Ko tosho and Tosho tsuba, it is very important to buy only certified examples such as this one. This tsuba is from the early Edo period, thus the Tosho only designation. If it is from the Momoyama period or earlier, they are usually given the attribution “Ko” tosho meaning older Tosho. Good Tosho tsuba in original condition, meaning not resized, or altered are hard to find. Many have a kozuka or kogai hitsu added for a remount later on the Edo period.
