Nice large set of menuki with the famous design of the catfish playing with a gourd. The catfish is a revered symbol in Japan, and the comical story of a catfish thinking a floating gourd is another catfish has been told many times over. This set of menuki is most likely from the late Muromachi period to the Momoyama period. That also shows how old this story is and how popular, as it is often seen on high end fittings from this period.
Done in deep black shakudo of the Goto School, with nice gold for the gourd and eyes.
Avery nice set at a reasonable price before they go to shinsa.
