The NTHK (Nihon Token Hozon Kai) or group for the preservation
and study of the Japanese sword is a group dedicated to the study and
understanding of Japanese swords and sword fittings in Japan.
There are 2 official main branches outside of Japan, one is in
Los Angeles (West Coast branch) and the other is in New York (East Coast
branch). The Los Angeles group has a meeting every 4th Friday for its
members, and in conjunction with the Nanka Token Kai, holds one of the
largest Japanese sword displays for the public every year at the Nisei
week celebration. This display is free for the public.
Study at the Los Angeles branch is held Japanese style with a
"Kantei" or sword identification challenge with a lecture
afterwards about the swords used. All items used for the lecture are
certified as genuine by either the NBTHK or NTHK.
As members of the branch,
we are also invited also to attend the study group meetings held in
Japan at the Home branch in Tokyo. This helps to increase our appreciation
and help expand our knowledge about Japanese swords as well as their
history.
